  3. UltiMOD is a native Gravis Ultrasound modplayer for OS/2 2.x or OS/2
  4. Warp with MMPM/2 installed.

  9. - support for:
  10.     - 4 channel, 31 and 15 instrument Protracker/Noisetracker files
  11.         - 4 and 8 channel Startracker files
  12.         - 6 and 8 channel Fasttracker files
  13. - ability to play samples inside a modfile at any note.
  14. - low overhead (measured on my 486 SX 25 Mhz computer using pulse and cpu tach)
  15.     - 21 % (4 channels)
  16.     - 23 % (6 channels)
  17.     - 25 % (8 channels)
  18. - support for songlists. (up to 512 files in one songlist)
  19. - Graphical user interface. (animated buttons, volume buttons, slidebar etc)
  20. - Multithreaded. Two threads for playing modfiles and 1 for the user interface.
  21.   This means that you can create your own songlist and save it while UltiMOD is
  22.   playing one of your modfiles.

  28. Step 1:

  30. Add the following line to your config.sys:
  31. DEVICE = DRIVE:PATH\GUSDD.SYS    /B:xxx /C:xxx /G:xx /M:xx /D:xx
  32.     /B:xxx        - GUS baseport   (default is address 220)
  33.     /C:xxx        - CODEC baseport (default is address 327)
  34.               (not needed for the 'normal' GUS)
  35.     /G:xx        - GF1 irq     (default is irq 11)
  36.     /M:xx        - Midi irq     (default is irq 5)
  37.     /D:x        - DMA channel     (default is DMA channel 7)

  39. WARNING: Robert Manley's and Gravis' MMPM/2 drivers should be REMmed out
  40.      your config.sys. (if they're present)
  41.      Loading both gusdd.sys and one of the MMPM/2 driver sets will cause
  42.      unpredictable behaviour of your system!
  43.      I'm currently working with Robert Manley to incorporate my driver into
  44.      his MMPM/2 driver so they can coexits peacefully.

  46. Step 2:

  48. Reboot your computer to load the driver necessary to run UltiMOD.
  49. If gusdd.sys couldn't be loaded, please follow the instructions given in the
  50. error message.

  52. Step 3:

  54. Copy ultimod.exe and ultimod.hlp into one directory and run ultimod.
  55. If you like to run ultimod from any directory on your hard disk(s) add
  56. the directory, in which you copied ultimod, to the 'SET HELP =' line
  57. and 'SET PATH = ' line in your config.sys. 
  58. Load your favourite modfile and fully exploit OS/2's multitasking capabilities
  59. by running it alongside other applications.
  60.  
  61. WARNING: You shouldn't open a dos box, which loads ultinit in its autoexec.bat,
  62.          while UltiMOD is playing a modfile. Ultinit resets the GUS and causes
  63.      UltiMOD to stop playing.
  64.      This also holds for starting a WIN-OS2 session, which loads the 
  65.      Gravis Windows drivers.
  66.      Don't run any programs (dos, os/2 or windows) that use the Ultrasound,
  67.       while running UltiMOD. Doing that could cause unpredictable results.
  68.      When UltiMOD isn't running, you can do whatever you want.

  71. General information about UltiMOD
  72. ================================================================================
  73. This document won't explain how UltiMOD works. It's interface is self 
  74. explaining by providing you with graphical pushbuttons and simple menu's.
  75. If something isn't clear just press F1 for online help.

  77. UltiMOD accepts a songlist or a modfile as a parameter on the command line.
  78.  
  79. Known limitation:
  80. For some reason I can't get the Ultrasound Max to initialize properly. 
  81. (I don't have a Max at home to test my driver)
  82. A temporary solution is to open a dosbox that loads ultinit before starting
  83. UltiMOD. I'll fix this ASAP.

  85. UltiMOD is shareware and needs to be registered after 30 days of use.

  88. Future plans for UltiMOD:
  89.     - support for S3M and possibly XM music files 
  90.       I encourage people that like to see XM support included to mail me, 
  91.       so I estimate the demand for this. The more people ask for XM support
  92.       the more likely I'll include it in a future release.
  93.       Should you like to see other file formats supported don't hesitate
  94.       to let me know.
  95.     - integration of my device driver into Robert Manley's MMPM/2 driver
  96.     - adding usefull suggestions from users to the program
  97.     - more WPS integration

  127. Q: When I start UltiMOD an error dialog pops up saying it couldn't load the
  128.    help manager. What's up?
  129. A: Be sure to have ultimod.exe and ultimod.hlp in one directory.
  130.    If you want to run ultimod from other directories, add the directory,
  131.    in which ultimod.hlp is located, to the line 'SET HELP =' in your config.sys.
  132. Q: When I try to play a modfile nothing happens or OS/2 crashes. 
  133.    Can't you even make a working modplayer?
  134. A: Are you sure you've included my device driver in your config.sys?
  135.    If so, please check if you've added the right baseport, irq and dma
  136.    values to my driver.
  137.    REM out any references to Robert Manley's or Gravis' MMPM/2 drivers.
  138.    If nothing helps, send me a bug report and we'll try to work it out.
  139. Q: When I run UltiMOD a dialog window pops up saying the device GUSDD$ is
  140.    in use or busy. Huh?
  141. A: Did you try to run 2 copies of UltiMOD alongside?
  142.    This doesn't work, so don't run more than one at a time.
  143. Q: When I try to run UltiMOD, OS/2 says it can't find SW.LIB. 
  144.    Damn OS/2, should have stayed with Windows. 
  145. A: UltiMOD uses the dynamic library SW.LIB for its graphical buttons and
  146.    some other stuff. To use this library you should install MMPM/2.
  147.    Consult you OS/2 manual for the details.
  148. Q: When I try to load a modfile, UltiMOD reports it can't load this file.
  149. A: There are two possibilities: - you don't have enough memory on your GUS
  150.                   to load all the instruments 
  151.                 - the file you selected isn't a valid modfile
  152. Q: Sometimes UltiMOD will stop playing music under a heavy system load. What's
  153.    causing this?
  154. A: There's still a bug in the device driver that causes this problem. Just press
  155.    the pause button twice to continue the song. 
  156.    This bug will be fixed in a future release.

  159. REGISTRATION
  160. ================================================================================
  161. You can use UltiMOD up to 30 days for free. If you continue to use it after this
  162. period, you should register.
  163.  
  164. The unregistered version doesn't save its settings (options, balance settings,
  165. volume, window position etc) in an .ini file. This limitation is removed in
  166. the registered version.
  167.  
  168. Registered users will receive free future upgrades or new versions. One regi-
  169. stration and free updates for the rest your life.
  170. These new versions will be send to you by email.

  172. The more users register the more chance I will continue to enhance UltiMOD.
